HENSOLDT South Africa helps to secure Remembrance Day in the Netherlands

Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 11 May 2020 – HENSOLDT South Africa’s SkyScan7X direction finder and GMJ9000G jammer formed part of an advanced deployment that secured Remembrance Day against malicious drones in Amsterdam last week.

The request had been made by the National Police three weeks before the event and HENSOLDT addressed the global threat with a global effort – our Xpeller team responded swiftly with resources from South Africa, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands. Because of current COVID-19 restrictions, the equipment was shipped from different locations and set up the day before the event, with remote support and monitoring from the teams involved.

For this deployment, the Xpeller counter-drone system was made up of two SkyScan7X direction finders, two SMS-D, each comprising a SPEXER 360 radar, daylight cameras and thermal cameras, as well as a SPEXER 500 radar and a GMJ9000G drone jammer. On location, this equipment was set up on two buildings approximately one kilometre apart to ensure the best radar and DF coverage.

The GEW® SkyScan7X multirole direction-finder from South Africa allowed the system to detect and geo-locate both the drone and the pilot in real-time. Capitalising on the advanced capabilities of our field-proven range of direction finders, the SkyScan7X is optimised with enhanced processing technology and special surveillance modes for detecting, classifying and locating drones and their operators. Designed for the modern signals scenario, this versatile direction finder is ideal for counter-drone operations, where speed, sensitivity and bandwidth are of vital importance.

Another building block of Xpeller, the GEW® GMJ9000G multirole jammer, employs sophisticated  jamming algorithms for jamming drone control-signals, thus effectively neutralising drone threats. This versatile jammer utilises the latest radio frequency (RF) and digital-signal synthesis technology to achieve outstanding suppression of the signals used by new threats, such as drones.

The system’s CxEye command and control software allows operators to optimise sensor placement quickly and efficiently using coverage maps. Using a communications link to connect the different deployment locations in Amsterdam, Xpeller provided a common operating picture with fused radar, camera and DF information, providing a live-stream of the operating picture to the police headquarters.

This integrated solution not only detects, but also successfully counters hostile drones at ranges of up to several kilometres. Xpeller is designed as a modular and scalable solution, with portable, mobile and static deployments tailored to clients’ sites, budgets and threat scenarios. Depending on the concept of operations or operating environment, HENSOLDT’s advanced sensors and effectors are optimally integrated to offer maximum protection.
